Developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Subnautica is a first-person open-world survival game based in the future on an unexplored Alien world. The game is in the development phase but was released on Steam, as an Early Access program in December 2014.
The Xbox One version was released only last year in May, whereas the PlayStation version is still being tested and will be released based on the reception of the Xbox version.
Subnautica Story Setting:
The game is based on the common future space terraforming theme where humans have ventured out into space to colonize new planets.
The game’s plot is set in the late 22nd century when a spaceship called Aurora crash-lands onto an unknown Alien Planet 4546B, with the lone survivor of the crash being the game’s playing character who escapes in a Lifepod 5.
Left in the unexplored and potentially hostile environment with the broken Lifepsod 5 and limited resources the character now has to explore the world, learn to survive and ultimately may eventually find a way back home.
Best suited to the story setting, this game is a mixture of open world exploration genre and survival genres. As the developers have put together elements from both these styles to make the remarkable gameplay of Subnautica.
The player has to continually explore the new environment which is mostly aquatic and has two islands, build new tools, equipment, and submersibles, interact with the friendly alien creatures, evade or engage in combat with the hostile ones and continuously learn new things that will enable the survival in the new world.
Along with this, a significant part of the gameplay is keeping the character sufficiently hydrated and fed at all times.
Players can choose to complete the game in 20 hours using the available blueprints and only completing the essential parts. But with the full experience, the game will take more than 40 hours for completion.
Game Mode In Subnautica:
There are four different gameplay modes in the game which is – Survival Mode, Freedom Mode, Hardcore Mode and Creative Mode.
In Survival mode, Oxygen level has to be kept in mind while travelling underwater whereas in the Hardcore mode everything is the same except for the disabled respawn feature.
In Freedom mode the hunger and thirst are disabled, and the Creative mode is more of a roam free gameplay experience where health, thirst, hunger, and oxygen are all
Latest Subnautica Game Updates:
Being a game in the development process, the whole game has gone multiple overhauls with each official update that the developer has rolled out since 2014. The gameplay, graphics, interface inventory, functions, combat, maps, etc.- everything has been updated and changed.
The newest update- v 1.0 is expected to be launched in the next few days with October 31st being the expected launch date.
Subnautica Cheats and Console Commands:
The console is an optional feature and is disabled by default. To activate it you need to press F3 and you’ll see a checkbox ticked in the top left saying: “Disable Console“. Press F8 to get a mouse cursor and uncheck the box to activate the console. Press “Enter” once the console is enabled, then type in one of the commands above.
Whenever you restart the game, you need to press one of the overlay keys first (e.g. F3) before pressing the console key.
It is highly recommended that you close all overlays before typing any command, as entering any number shall change the game settings on some overlays (e.g. on the F3 overlay).
Note: Console Commands, like the biome command, will not work if the player is inside the Seamoth.

The early access version has been received very nicely by the gaming community with PC Gamer describing the game as an “Underwater Minecraft.”
Although the game has its complaints like lack of intuition in some of the game aspects, the exploring open world gameplay has been praised highly along with the originality of the whole survival concept of the game.
With excellent reviews all over the internet, it is safe to say that we are waiting for the full release scheduled for next year.
